Seeing the Game from the Sidelines: Coaching at Villarreal’s North American ID Camp

This year, I had the opportunity to participate in Villarreal’s North American ID Camp, not as a player, but as a coach. Being part of a camp connected to Villarreal CF gave me a completely new perspective on the game and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect.

A Truly International Environment

The camp brought together players and coaches from across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, creating a competitive, high-level environment rooted in shared standards and passion for the game. Every session reflected different styles, ideas, and football cultures, all pushing each other to be better.

Learning from Spanish Coaches

Working alongside coaches from Spain - Carlos, Vicki, and Rafa, was an incredible learning experience. Their professionalism, attention to detail, and clarity in communication showed me how elite environments are run. Watching how they structured sessions, corrected players, and evaluated performance gave me insight I’ll carry with me as both a player and coach.

Assisting and Observing at a Higher Level

As part of the staff, I assisted with training sessions, helped manage drills, and supported players throughout the camp. But just as important was what I observed: how coaches identify potential, how they read the game, and what they value most in players beyond just technical skill.

Coaches vs. LV United: A Moment I’ll Never Forget

One of the most meaningful moments of the camp was the Coaches vs. LV United game, where I played for LV United. It was surreal to compete against coaches I deeply admire, people I’ve learned so much from, while also sharing the field with my Pa, who played alongside the coaches.

The stands were full, the energy was electric, and the atmosphere felt special. Running alongside my Pa in front of a crowd, in a game that celebrated the soccer community, was something I’ll never forget. It reminded me how powerful this sport is, not just competitively, but emotionally and generationally.

Becoming a Better Player Through Coaching

Being involved as a coach sharpened my understanding of the game. Seeing soccer from the sidelines—how decisions are made, how players are evaluated, and how moments are managed—has already changed how I play. This experience didn’t pull me away from being a player; it pushed me forward.

Looking Ahead

Participating in Villarreal’s ID Camp as a coach was an honor. Adding moments like the Coaches vs. LV United match made it even more meaningful. These experiences continue to fuel my motivation, deepen my understanding of the game, and remind me why I love futbol so much.

Every role—player, coach, teammate—offers lessons. I’m grateful to be learning from all of them.
